The Other Valley

A new/old itinerary following the age old tracks walked by the villagers of Caramanico in the centuries. Nature, history, culture and beautiful landscapes just few steps from the Medieval heart of Caramanico Terme.

Starting from Piazza Garibaldi, facing the majestic façade of the church of San Nicola di Bari, this itinerary allows you to explore the old neighbourhoods of San Nicola and San Maurizio, leaving the village through one of the medieval gates, the Porta delle Nasse, still perfectly preserved. From here, the path follows the old "Way of the Perella", an ancient track walked by the locald to reach the river Orta. Once at the river, just take the paved road for few metres to cross the bridge and then start walking on the gravel road coasting the Orta river until the picnic area "il Fratino", after which, through a wooden/concrete bridge, you cross the Orta river again. At the next intersection it is possible to either take the right, taking the "Costa delle Monache" path that will lead you to the village, or keep going straight to meet the crystal-clear Orfento river, in a section of the valley very easy to access where, at the end, an ancient water-mill with its pounding waterfall will leave you in awe. It is possible to close the loop hike following the shaded paved road that connects the end of this path with the former Clarisse convent, at the foot of Caramanico Terme, crossing another old medieval gate, the Porta da Piedi.
